10 Common Health Myths — Debunked
Click any myth to get a detailed AI explanation.
"Vaccines cause autism."
This originated from a fraudulent 1998 study that was fully retracted. Over 50 large-scale studies across millions of children worldwide have found absolutely no link between vaccines and autism spectrum disorder.
"You only use 10% of your brain."
Brain imaging studies show we use virtually all parts of the brain, and most areas are active almost all the time. Different regions handle different tasks — none sit permanently idle.
"Antibiotics cure colds and flu."
Antibiotics only kill bacteria — they have zero effect on viruses, which cause colds and flu. Misuse of antibiotics contributes to antimicrobial resistance, a global health emergency.
"Eating fat makes you fat."
Healthy fats (avocados, nuts, olive oil, fish) are essential for brain function, hormones, and heart health. Weight gain is primarily driven by excess total caloric intake, not dietary fat alone.
"You must drink 8 glasses of water a day."
Hydration needs vary by body size, activity, climate, and diet. There is no universal scientific basis for the "8 glasses" rule. Thirst and urine color are better personal guides.
"Cracking knuckles causes arthritis."
Multiple studies, including one where a doctor cracked one hand's knuckles for 60 years, found no link to arthritis. The sound is nitrogen gas bubbles collapsing in synovial fluid.
"Sugar causes hyperactivity in children."
Multiple double-blind studies have found no causal link between sugar and hyperactivity. The belief is largely driven by expectation bias — parents told their child had sugar rated them as more hyperactive.
"Cold weather causes colds."
Colds are caused by viruses (mainly rhinoviruses), not by cold temperatures. People get more colds in winter because they spend more time indoors in close contact, facilitating viral transmission.
"You lose most body heat through your head."
The head accounts for about 10% of body surface area and loses a proportional amount of heat — no more than any other uncovered body part. This myth originated from a flawed military study in the 1950s.
"Natural remedies are always safe because they're natural."
Many natural substances are highly toxic (e.g. arsenic, hemlock). Herbal supplements can interact dangerously with medications, and "natural" products are not automatically regulated for purity or dosage.
